Leaves and tree trunk of this iridescent green tree of life seem to make this tree come alive in the Passover seder plate.
The tree of life was planted by God at the beginning of the world in the Garden of Eden. Tradition also associates the Tree of Life with the Torah. The Torah is "a Tree of Life - Etz Hayyim - to all who hold fast to it." The design was created with Julie Staller-Pentelnik, a Jewish artist, specializing in Hebrew calligraphy and ketubot.
The Tree of life seder plate had six separate sections for special foods central to the seder ceremony - shank bone, roasted egg, horseradish, haroset, parsley and bitter herbs.
A few explanations are are follows: The bitter herbs (maror) symbolizes the bitterness of being a slave in Egypt. The haroset (nuts, fruit, and wine) is the mortar made by the Hebrew slaves. The shank bone represents the lamb that was the sacrifice on the eve of the Exodus.
The beveled glass with the hebrew an english has been engraved. Each section of stained glass has been hand cut, wrapped in copper and solder to form the shape of the seder plate.
